How underlined text works
Plain text has no underline, but Unicode has combining marks that draw lines relative to the character before them. The combining low line (U+0332) draws a line underneath; place one after every letter and the pieces join into an underline. The same trick gives you a double line (U+0333), an overline (U+0305), a dotted line (U+0324) and a wavy line (U+0330).
Over & Under stacks two marks on each character for a boxed-in look, and Bold Underlined combines the mark with bold sans letters for headings. By default the line continues under spaces so a phrase reads as one underlined unit; switch that off to underline each word separately.
Two things to keep in mind. Each mark is an extra character, so underlined text roughly doubles in length — worth knowing in bios and names with limits. And apps draw the marks with their own fonts, so the line can look slightly uneven or broken in places.
About compatibility: Underline marks display in most apps, but some name fields strip them, and some screen readers announce each mark. Keep underlined text short.
