How italic text works
Italic text here is built from Unicode’s italic alphabets: Mathematical Italic (a serif design), Sans-Serif Italic, and bold versions of each. They were created for math notation, where a slanted x means something different from an upright x, but they work just as well for emphasis in everyday writing.
Serif italic has the classic bookish slant; sans italic is quieter and matches most app interfaces. The Italic Underlined style adds a combining low line under each letter — handy for titles in places that can’t underline. Handwritten Italic uses the script alphabet for a looser, pen-like look.
The “Italicize” switch is the tool’s most useful trick. In “Only marked words” mode, anything you wrap in single asterisks is slanted and the asterisks are removed, so you can write I really mean it and paste a sentence that reads naturally. Numbers have no italic form in Unicode and stay upright in every style except Bold Italic Sans.
Screen readers and search: Italic math letters can be read aloud as symbols and won’t match searches. Use them for emphasis, not for names people need to find.
Frequently asked questions
How do I italicize only one word?
Choose “Only *marked* words”, then wrap the word in single asterisks: I *really* mean it. The asterisks disappear and only that word is slanted.
Why does the italic serif h look different?
Unicode placed the italic small h (ℎ) in an older block before the rest of the italic alphabet existed, so some fonts draw it slightly differently. The sans italic alphabet has no gaps.
Do italic letters include numbers?
No. Unicode has no italic digits, so numbers stay upright. Bold Italic Sans is the only style here that converts digits, and it uses bold sans numerals.
Can I use italic text for book and movie titles?
Yes — that’s one of the most common uses. In a word processor or email editor, prefer its built-in italics, which screen readers handle better.
