How mirror text works
A true mirror image flips text horizontally, and plain text can’t be flipped, so mirror text is assembled from characters that already look reversed. Some are borrowed from other alphabets — Я from Cyrillic, ᗡ from Canadian syllabics, ꙅ from Old Cyrillic — and some are phonetic letters like ɘ and ɿ.
Mirroring the letters isn’t enough on its own; a reflection also reverses their order. Whole line does both, so it reads correctly when held up to a real mirror. Each word mirrors the letters and reverses them within each word, keeping the sentence order. Don’t reverse keeps your letter order and only swaps the letters, and the Mirror the letters switch turns substitution off so you can reverse without swapping.
Symmetrical letters — A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y and several lowercase ones — are already their own reflection. Any character without a mirrored form is listed under the result.
Frequently asked questions
What is mirror text?
Text that looks like its own reflection: every letter faces the other way and the line runs right to left. Leonardo da Vinci famously kept notes in mirror writing.
Why doesn’t every letter change?
Many letters — A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X and Y — look the same in a mirror. Others use look-alike characters such as ɘ for e and ꙅ for s.
What does “Each word” do?
It mirrors every word in place and keeps the words in their original order, so the sentence still reads left to right while each word looks reflected.
Can I read mirror text with a real mirror?
Yes, that’s the fun of it. Hold the screen up to a mirror and the default Whole line setting reads normally, apart from the few letters with no perfect mirrored form.
