How Discord fonts work
Discord doesn’t offer font choices for names, but it does accept most Unicode characters, and that’s where these styles come from. Each one swaps your letters for look-alike characters — bold sans, script, small caps, Fraktur — that Discord displays like any other text.
Not every style suits every field. Name-friendly styles are compact and readable in the member list and chat headers. Styles marked Best in messages — black squares, glitch marks, strikethrough — take up more room or add extra characters, so they’re better in messages and About me.
Pick a field with “Using it for”, then tap the eye on any card to see it in the generic chat profile. The counter shows the length against that field’s approximate limit and warns when a style may count as more characters than it looks. Your @username is separate from your display name and only accepts plain lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods.
Where Discord fonts work
- Works Display name Styled letters usually show up. Keep it under about 32 characters.
- Works Server nickname Usually accepted; some servers have their own naming rules.
- Works Messages About 2,000 characters (more with Nitro). Every style works here.
- Works About me Short bio of roughly 190 characters.
- Blocked Username Only lowercase a–z, 0–9, _ and . are allowed. Styled text is rejected.
Limits are approximate and platforms change them from time to time, so check the app if you are close to a limit.
Tip: Discord has its own formatting
In messages, Discord’s markdown is easier to read for everyone, including screen-reader users:

Use styled Unicode where markdown doesn’t work: display names, About me and server nicknames.

How do I change my Discord display name font?
Type your name here, copy a Name-friendly style, and paste it into the display name field in your Discord profile settings. Your @username stays plain — Discord only allows lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods there.
Why do some styles say “Best in messages”?
Those styles use emoji-like squares, glitch marks or strikethrough lines that can look cluttered or be trimmed in short name fields. They work well in messages, where there’s more room.
Do I need Nitro for fancy text?
No. Styled Unicode is regular text, so it works on free accounts. Nitro mainly raises the message length limit.
Should I use fonts or Discord markdown?
In messages, Discord’s own markdown (**bold**, *italic*) is easier for screen readers. Use Unicode styles where markdown doesn’t work: display names, nicknames and About me.
