How fonts on X work
X shows every post in the same font, but it accepts Unicode, so styled letters from the math alphabets — bold, italic, script, monospace — paste in and keep their look. That’s the usual way people add emphasis to a post without formatting buttons.
The catch is counting. X weighs characters: most basic Latin letters and punctuation count as one, while characters outside those ranges, including every styled letter here, count as two. A fully bold 280-character post simply doesn’t fit. The counter on this page applies that weighting to whichever field you choose — Name, Bio or Post — and shows the plain character count alongside it.
In practice, style a few words rather than a whole post: a bold opening line, an italic title, a struck-through correction. Keep hashtags and keywords in plain letters, because search won’t match styled characters to normal ones. The preview is a generic layout, not X’s interface.

Why does styled text use up my character limit faster on X?
X counts most characters outside the basic Latin range as two. Bold, italic and script letters all fall outside it, so a styled post fills up about twice as fast. The counter here uses that weighted count.
Can I use bold or italic in X posts?
Standard posts don’t have formatting buttons, so Unicode bold and italic letters are a common workaround. Use them for a word or two; screen readers and search treat them as unusual characters.
Can I change the font of my @handle?
No. Handles only accept letters, numbers and underscores. Your display name and bio accept styled text.
Will styled text affect who sees my post?
