How strikethrough text works
Strikethrough text is built from combining overlay marks — characters that draw across the one before them. The combining long stroke overlay (U+0336) makes the classic line; its shorter cousin (U+0335), the solidus overlays (U+0338 and U+0337) and the tilde overlay (U+0334) give you the other styles. One mark goes after every character, and in most fonts the strokes join into a line.
Strike through the spaces too is on by default, so a crossed-out phrase reads as a single edit rather than separate words. Turn it off to strike each word on its own. Bold Strikethrough pairs the mark with bold sans letters when you want the correction to be impossible to miss.
It’s popular for jokes (“I love Mondays”), visible edits and old prices. Remember that each mark adds a character, and that strikethrough can’t tell a screen-reader user that text was removed — say it in words if it matters.

How do I strikethrough text on Instagram or TikTok?
Those apps have no strikethrough button. Type your text here, copy a style, and paste it into your caption or bio. The line is made of combining characters, so it travels with the text.
What’s the difference between the strike styles?
Strikethrough uses a long stroke that joins into one line. Short Stroke is thinner and more dashed, Slash crosses each letter diagonally, and Tilde Strike draws a wavy line.
Do I need this on Discord?
Not in messages — there, ~~double tildes~~ create real strikethrough. Use these characters where markdown doesn’t work, like display names and About me.
Is strikethrough text accessible?
Screen readers may read the marks or ignore them, and they won’t announce the text as deleted. Don’t rely on strikethrough alone to show that something changed.
